BIOGRAPHY

Joshua Goshen was born December 20, 1993 in Brea, California. Joshua is in the eighth grade at La Mirada Heights Christian Junior High School. He has an older brother, who also races, and two younger sisters.

Having been born into a family with two generations of racing, Joshua, like his older brother, was “born to race.” Joshua started racing go-karts at the age of six. From the beginning, Joshua was very competitive, but also displayed mechanical skills that few drivers his age possess. Quite often Joshua could be found in the pits with a wrench in his hand preparing his kart to go back on the track for the next race. The combination of understanding the mechanics of the car coupled with driving skills is what makes world class professional drivers. Joshua is one of the few individuals to possess both of those abilities.

In his first year competing in go-karts, Joshua was already winning races. In 2001, he won his first Apex Club Championship. Also in 2001, Joshua stepped up to more competition and a bigger challenge by competing in the International Karting Federation (IKF), Region 7. In 2002, Joshua finished top 10 in both of the IKF classes in which he raced.

The first year Joshua was old enough to race the 80cc shifter kart was 2003. He won the Championship in the Super Karts USA (SKUSA), Mission Region 80cc Cadet Shifter Class and finished 4th for the IKF Region 7 Championship. Joshua also finished 8th in the IKF Region 7 HPV 1 Cadet Class. In 2004, Joshua repeated his Championship in the SKUSA, Mission Region 80cc Cadet Shifter Class. He ended the year with a 5th place finish in the SKUSA Super Nationals 80cc Cadet Shifter Class out of 26 participants from North and South America.

In 2005, Joshua stepped up to the 80cc IKF Junior Shifter Class finishing 6th. In his first year in the IKF HPV 1 Junior Class, he finished 8th for the Championship. Joshua finished 5th in the 80cc Junior Shifter Class at the IKF Grand Nationals. This was his first podium in the IKF Grand Nationals, but it would not his last. Joshua had not raced in the Stars of Karting series prior to 2005 because of the travel commitment and the amount of school he would miss. The second and third race of the year was held at Rocky Moran Kart Track in Beaumont, California. Always wanting to compete against the best, Joshua entered the two Junior 1 Shifter races for the weekend finishing in the top ten both days. Despite not having entered the first race of the year at Oklahoma City, Joshua finished National 10th and Western 6th for the Stars of Karting Junior 1 Class. Joshua ended the year with a 3rd place finish in the SKUSA Super Nationals Junior 1 Class. It capped off a great year for Joshua because he was competing against drivers one to two years older.

In 2006, Joshua won his first IKF National Championship in the 80cc shifter Class. In IKF Region 7, he finished 6th in the HPV 4 Junior Class and 8th in the HPV 2 Junior Class. Having obtained his goal of a National Championship in karting, Joshua decided it was time to step up to racing open wheel cars. At the end of the year, Joshua began testing in the 1.6 liter Formula TR Renault in preparation for the next season.

In 2007, Joshua was given permission to race in the Formula TR Pro Series 1.6 liter class. Because of his young age, Joshua had to undergo significant testing to substantiate that he was able to handle a 125 horse power open wheel race car on a road course. He passed his tests with flying colors and, at 13 years of age, became the youngest person to drive in any open wheel race car series. Because of his birth date, Joshua has always competed with drivers as much as two years his senior, but what had been a liability in karting became an asset in 2007. With every win, podium, pole, and fast lap, Joshua set a record that will not soon be broken. Joshua came on strong in the second half of 2007 with 6 wins in the last 10 races to finish 3rd in the Formula TR Pro Series 1.6 liter Championship. For the year, Joshua had 6 wins, 9 podiums, 6 poles and 5 fast laps out of the 20 races for the season. Had it not been for some bad luck in the early part of the season, Joshua would have won the championship. As a tribute to his accomplishments, Joshua received the 2007 “Hard Charger Award.” Tommy Burns, a former F-1 driver, had the opportunity to watch Joshua at several of his races and said he had never seen someone with so much ability at such a young age.

Despite his competitive nature and strong desire to win, Joshua has not let his success go to his head. When he gets out of his car, Joshua can be found, like any 13 year old, playing with his remote control car. He also keeps the situation light hearted in the pits with the pranks he continuously plays on the mechanics and engineers. Joshua credits his success to Kimball Williams his driving coach and setup man in karts, Mark Pivec, his engineer in the Formula TR Pro Series and great crews. In the pits, he relishes talking with the spectators and because of his outgoing personality, Joshua has always had tremendous fan support.

When not racing and going to school, Joshua has given time to those less fortunate by helping feed the homeless during the holidays. For the past five years, he has made an annual trip with his church to Mexico to help build homes in one of the poor areas. Joshua attends church regularly and maintains a strong Christian faith. In his limited leisure time, Joshua enjoys wake boarding, water skiing, motorcycle riding and playing with his remote control cars and helicopters.
